UNDERSTANDING TERMITES – WHY TERMITE BAITING? - Termite Free Naturally

Many people looking to use termite baiting are only interested in avoiding the harmful effects of chemical sprays.

This is one great reason but by no means the main one.

The number one reason to use termite baiting instead of chemicals is that termite baiting works.

Chemical sprays may keep termites away from your house for a few years but they will not get rid of the colony.

The queen termite (coptotermes acinaciformis) lives for 50 to 70 years and then the colony goes in 30 year cycles.

These termites are responsible for 70% of termite damage to houses in SA and will only travel 50 to 100 metres to a food source.

What this means is that if you have termites you can either use chemical sprays and leave the colony there (it will always put pressure on your home and you will not know where it will appear next), or you can kill it through termite baiting or direct eradication in which case that colony will be killed and will never start up again.

If termites do get into your home their tunnels will remain, just like a food source highway for those termites or other colonies.

With termite baiting the termite traps in your garden will remain to warn of any other termites that may be in the area and allow for further eradication if and when it is needed, before they get into your home.

WHY TERMITE BAITING?

  1. It kills the colony and gets rid of the problem
  2. Prevention – it allows for termite detection and eradication before they get into your home
  3. It keeps your home and family free from toxic chemicals

Would you know if you had termites? Most home owners don’t know they have termites until damage becomes apparent. And by this stage significant damage could have been done. Alarmingly, an estimated one in three Aussie homes face termite attacks each year, according to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The Issue Termites are found throughout Adelaide and the wider South Australian region. They work tirelessly around the clock and could be in your house or back yard. Chemical treatments can simply send termites elsewhere only to return once the chemical treatment wears off or is diluted by weather conditions. Customer Study - The Situation Our customer Julie was actively receiving termite treatments from another company only to find active termites in a beam and an internal door frame inside her property. “For many years, before being referred to Termite Free Naturally, we wasted lots of time (and money) with a termite control company who drilled holes in our floors and walls and pumped bucket-loads of chemicals into our house... only to have the termites return a few years later, within the warranty period, where they offered to come back and do the same again. Termite Free Naturally has a very different approach and I felt confident from the beginning that they really were the experts.” - Julie L The Solution - TFN’s Trapping & Baiting System 01. AREA INSPECTED - The house and surround are thoroughly searched looking for termite activity and colonies. In Julie’s case we found activity in a ceiling beam and door frame as well as the termite nest in a nearby tree. We treated the nest and 3 other trees in the vicinity, halting new activity at her property. We also baited the beam and door frame to treat the inside activity. 02. VENUS TERMITE TRAPS & BAITING - Traps are placed strategically around the building to warm of termite activity in the area and to destroy colonies that cannot be located. TFN installed 15 concrete traps around the perimeter of Julie’s property, acting as future inspection points and to warn of any new activity. 03. DIRECT TERMITE COLONY ERADICATION - If the colony can be found it will be directly treated and eradicated. In Julie’s case we were able to locate the nest in a nearby tree and treat it directly, along with 3 other trees in the vicinity. After our 2nd inspection of the baits, each spaced 7-8 weeks apart all activity inside had ceased and the eradiation was complete. 18 months later and Julie’s property is still termite free. Pros of TFN’s Termite Trapping & Baiting system Our Venus Traps are placed every 4-5 metres around the building. This allows for tunneling termites to smell and come into the wood traps before they get to the house . Venus Termite traps are further apart compared to other systems because our wood is in direct contact with the soil , and our Venus traps contain more wood than any other system for termites to consume. Venus Termite Traps are set in the ground. They are flush with the top of the soil, pavers, or concrete, and are very easy to inspect . Traps act as an early warning system or a place to directly treat out termites if they are present. Cost effective - traps can be spaced further apart compared to other systems. Wood packs are in direct contact with dirt not encased in a plastic housing, ensuring subterranean termites can sniff the timbers out. Installed directly in concrete or pavers making them more robust and easier to inspect . Traps contain wood packs unless termites are present and then a bait is installed minimising the cost of baits. Chemical applications tend to send termites elsewhere only to return once the application has worn off or is diluted by the elements.
