The Solution - TFN’s Trapping & Baiting System

01. AREA INSPECTED - The house and surround are thoroughly searched looking for termite activity and colonies.

In Julie’s case we found activity in a ceiling beam and door frame as well as the termite nest in a nearby tree.
We treated the nest and 3 other trees in the vicinity, halting new activity at her property.
We also baited the beam and door frame to treat the inside activity.

02. VENUS TERMITE TRAPS & BAITING - Traps are placed strategically around the building to warm of termite activity in the area and to destroy colonies that cannot be located.

TFN installed 15 concrete traps around the perimeter of Julie’s property, acting as future inspection points and to warn of any new activity.

03. DIRECT TERMITE COLONY ERADICATION - If the colony can be found it will be directly treated and eradicated.

In Julie’s case we were able to locate the nest in a nearby tree and treat it directly, along with 3 other trees in the vicinity.
After our 2nd inspection of the baits, each spaced 7-8 weeks apart all activity inside had ceased and the eradiation was complete.
18 months later and Julie’s property is still termite free.

Pros of TFN’s Termite Trapping & Baiting system

Our Venus Traps are placed every 4-5 metres around the building.

We have been very busy at Termite Free Naturally, the warmer weather has definately brought the termites out.

Our technicians have been taking some interesting pictures of termite activity and damage they have come across.

RE-TREATMENT AND CHEMICAL BARRIERS ARE YOU PAYING MORE THAN YOU NEED TO?

It is important to be informed of what is the standard if you decide to go ahead with chemical barriers. It seems many people are being mislead into believing they are required to have annual top ups of the chemical barrier a few rooms per year, this is not the necessary.

Chemical barriers do need to be topped up or reapplied around the entire home, but the time frame depends on the life expectancy of the chemical being used.

Diatomaceous Earth – Insect Killer

Diatomaceous Earth Crawling Insect Killer is a natural mechanical insecticide that is an excellent alternative to toxic, chemical pesticides. It is made from the fossilized shells of tiny sea creatures called diatoms. It comes in the form of a chalky powder.

Because it is like a light dust, it easily clings to the bodies of insects as they walk and crawl over it. The tiny glass-like particles then cut the waxy coating of insects and they eventually dry out and die. Insects cannot become immune to Diatomaceous Earth. It is especially good for killing Black Ant colonies.

About a year and a half ago, I picked up some kind of mite from my little poodle, who slept on my bed at night. I was so miserable I thought I would die! Copto Sub Colony Benalla, Victoria - Termite Free Naturally

A photo we received from a customer in Benalla Victoria, of a Copto sub colony under the house. Amazing how such tiny insects can create all this mud without us realising! The nest is about 2.5 metres long and is built up over the ant caps and up to the joists.

A DAY OUT ON A TERMITE ERADICATION JOB

Hello my name is Rachel and I work in the office here at Termite Free Naturally. Today I went out on an eradication job to see what our fantastic technicians do. The property at Elizabeth had termite activity inside a linen cupboard.

As you can see the termites had brought in quite a lot of mud to fill in any gaps. I was quite amazed at how much mud they had brought in. A bait was attached inside the cupboard to eradicate any termites present at the feeding site.

Then it was time to go outside and find where these pesky little termites were coming from. Our technician Scott quickly identified which trees were most likely to be home to a termite nest. To check for a termite nest inside a tree a small hole is drilled then a temperature probe is inserted. This does no damage to the tree and we always make sure to plug up the hole.

Several trees in neighbouring yards were checked and one small nest and one large nest was found and eradicated. When Scott drilled into the tree where the large nest was it was interesting to see the termites runnning out of the holes, this is because they want to seal up the hole as quickly as possible.

I took a photo of some of the area that the colony had muddied up. Termites are hard workers but they had probably been in this tree for quite a long time considering how much they had done.

Once the colony had been found and eradicated it was time to install the trap system . The trap system is a great way to detect termites in the area before they start eating your house.

I had a great time, and learnt a lot today. I have a better understanding of how it all works and greater knowledge to pass on to our wonderful customers.

Hard to image a nest could build up to this size without you knowing, a very large Nasutitermes nest found under a house in South Australia. The termites used the boxes to nest in.

This tree was cut down (not by us) and we found that a termite colony had hollowed out quite a large area to live in. It is quite amazing how circular the hole they created is.

This particular termite is found Australia wide but fortunately mainly does small amounts of damage over a long period of time this is because they have such small nests restricting their numbers and not growing in size like the Coptotermes for example, they also do not range far from their small not populous colonies. Hetero can cause significant damage when numerous nests or colonies build up in one small area, they are mainly hardwood eaters but will eat other softwood if necessary. By far the best and most Eco way to treat Hetero is through termite traps and large hardwood feeding stations.

UNDERSTANDING TERMITES – WHY TERMITE BAITING? - Termite Free Naturally

Many people looking to use termite baiting are only interested in avoiding the harmful effects of chemical sprays.

This is one great reason but by no means the main one.

The number one reason to use termite baiting instead of chemicals is that termite baiting works.

Chemical sprays may keep termites away from your house for a few years but they will not get rid of the colony.

The queen termite (coptotermes acinaciformis) lives for 50 to 70 years and then the colony goes in 30 year cycles.

These termites are responsible for 70% of termite damage to houses in SA and will only travel 50 to 100 metres to a food source.

What this means is that if you have termites you can either use chemical sprays and leave the colony there (it will always put pressure on your home and you will not know where it will appear next), or you can kill it through termite baiting or direct eradication in which case that colony will be killed and will never start up again.

If termites do get into your home their tunnels will remain, just like a food source highway for those termites or other colonies.

With termite baiting the termite traps in your garden will remain to warn of any other termites that may be in the area and allow for further eradication if and when it is needed, before they get into your home.

UNDERSTANDING TERMITES – NOT SO SCARY

For most of us our homes are our biggest investments and the thought of them being eaten away by termites is terrifying to say the least. Like anything education gives understanding and can remove the worry from termites completely.

The fact that termites travel underground and can eat away a good part of a house without being noticed is fuel for an industry driven by fear. What it is important to appreciate is that termites have habits and can be predicatable. If you understand what termites are after, where they can be detected early and how to get rid of them then you are on your way to a good nights sleep.

At Termite Free Naturally we educate our customers on how to set traps out in the garden so that they can be detected before they get into the house, how often they need to be checked and the times of year termites are most active….along with the different types of termites
